The past month feels like a blur, with more death and tragic stories than I thought I'd experience in my entire career -in ten careers. Every morning signal 5-5-5-5 blares out over the FDNY radio, officially announcing the death of more fallen heroes. "Four 5's" used to be an incredibly sad, but rarely used signal. Now it's a daily occurrence.
The pain my brothers and I feel is endless, as we carry on with our daily routine. But we must move forward and not allow the tragic events of September 11 to continue to wreak havoc on the loved ones of those we've lost. Take heart in the phenomenally heroic efforts of New York City's firefighters, as well as the other emergency service workers who were on the scene that tragic day. Tens of thousand of civilian lives were snatched from death because of the quick action of these brave souls.
Strength and courage beyond definition was exhibited on that fateful morning, but so was love and caring for each other. The love and caring hasn't stopped. The outpouring of generosity and affection from the citizens of our great city, as well as across the country is unparalleled, and has helped to heal the wounds.
Together, as a nation we will heal from this cowardly attack, and grow stronger. It's time to gradually return to some of the things that make us feel better. Go out for walk, play golf, bike ride, and if it feels right, workout -do whatever makes you happy.
Thank you America, you truly are the greatest place on earth.
