Providence firefighters were dispatched for a report of fire in the area of Jewett St, and Bath, St in the city's Smith Hill area.
Firefighters arrived within minutes to find a four story building with fire venting from the basement.
The basement contained a store while apartments occupied the rest of the 4 story building.
An additional engine and ladder were called to the scene immediately due to the ammount of fire and the life hazard within the building.
Crews quickly knocked down the fire in the basement resulting in minimal damage to the first floor.
There was no report of firefighter or civlilian injuries and the cause of the blaze is not known.
