Colby, Kan. firefighters pull a 2 1/2-inch line during a late evening fire
that left an unattached garage in smoking ruins on Feb. 27.
The owner told fire officials he was working on his snowmobile when it backfired and caught some combustibles on fire, according to Rick
Dickman, Colby assistant fire chief.
The Colby Fire Department received the call at 8:36 p.m. and fire units
were on scene within minutes. Dickman said the fire was already through the roof when the first units arrived.
Firefighters were hampered by electrical lines that had burned through and
had to call city power crews to cut off electricity to the area for a short time.
A damage estimate is not available, but Dickman said a car, a motorcycle and the snowmobile were destroyed, along with tools and numerous other items.
A house also received heat damage including broken windows and blistered
paint.
Twenty firefighters manning two engines and a quint were on the scene for about three hours. No one was hurt in the blaze.
