North Carolina Firefighters Perform Airplane Extrication

Photos/Story by Doug Clark

On the evening of July 15th, Shepherds Volunteer Fire Department responded to an airplane crash near the Lake Norman Airport.

Units on the scene found an aircraft with two occupants crashed into the trees about 65 feet in the air.

Mutual aid was requested from the Mooresville and Troutman Rescue Squads, along with Statesville and Mooresville City ladder trucks to assist in the rescue operation.

Rescuers had to cut away several branches before gaining access to the aircraft.

One rescuer repelled from the Statesville ladder truck to perform the rescue of the two uninjured men.

Both pilots were lowered to the ground and reunited with their families.

The FAA is still investigating this incident.
