New York Firefighters Battle 4 Alarm Fire

Photos/Story by Mark Mendola

On July 27, 2001, the Buffalo Fire Department was dispatched to Genesee and Leslie.

First due Engine 31's officer immediately requested a second alarm.

He found a vacant, two story brick building (a former lumber company) fully involved. The building was attached to two wood frame buildings which also became ablaze.

Flames then jumped fifty feet across to a building which housed Buffalo Glass Block.

Embers flew over railroad tracks and ignited a vacant 2 1/2 story wood frame on Colorado Street.

At this point, a total of six properties needed the attention of the department.

Four alarms were struck bringing approximately 80 firefighters to the scene.

Three tower ladders, two aerials, and multiple turrets were utilized. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

At present, the suspicious fire is under investigation.
