Maryland Firefighters Battle House Fire

Photos by Wayne Courtney
Story by Matt Trivett

On May 3, 2001 at 1735 hrs, Montgomery County fire fighters battled a 2 alarm house fire on Fleming Ave. in Bethesda.

Units arrived on the scene with the back of the house heavily involved with rapid extension to the roof.

The first lines deployed were to protect the exposures on side 2 and 4. Initial interior lines were eventually pulled out just prior to total roof and top floor ceiling collapse.

Exterior lines and Tower 20 finished the job. With newer lightweight roof construction, total roof involvement and collapse occured within 10 minutes of arrival.

Damage to the house was estimated at $1,000,000 to the structure and $200,000 to exposures including exposures 2a and 4a.

Investigation was centered around a deck at the rear of the house.
