St. Petersburg, FL, first-due Engine 5 waits for water at a one-alarm fire involving a wood-frame home located just south of downtown. Three engines, a squad, a truck and a rescue under the command of a deputy chief responded to the early-morning blaze. With low temperatures outside and no working heat, an occupant had thrown a gasoline-soaked log into the fireplace atop smoking embers. The house was destroyed, leaving 10 people homeless.

This month's Firehouse® is dedicated to Assistant Chief Dana R. Johnson, 46, of the Grantsburg, WI, Fire Association and Firefighter Lloyd E. Curtis, 75, of the Vestal, NY, Volunteer Fire Department, who died in the line of duty, February 2001; Assistant Chief Chris Kobierowski, 41, of the Delta Junction, AK, Volunteer Fire Department, who died in the line of duty, March 2001; Firefighter Alberto Tirado, 40 of the Passaic, NJ, Fire Department and Firefighter Lawrence Webb, 37, of the Newark, NJ, Fire Department, who died in the line of duty, May 2001; and Firefighter John Downing, 40, Firefighter Brian Fahey, 46, and Firefighter Harry Ford, 50, of the FDNY, who died in the line of duty, July 2001.
