While workers were replacing sewers, a major water main break occurred. A 20-inch intermediate-pressure natural gas transmission line was undermined and started to let natural gas escape. The gas ignited and created a huge fireball. It took 20 fire companies to protect the exposures until the gas could be shut down.

This month's Firehouse® is dedicated to Pilot Larry Groff, 55, and Pilot Las Stratte, 45 of the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection; and Firefighter Michael Gorumba, 27, of the FDNY, who died in the line of duty, August 2001; and to Captain Neil Woodward, 32, of the Blackman, FL, Volunteer Fire Department, who died in the line of duty, September 2001.
