The Congressional Fire Services Institute reports that Senator John McCain (R-AZ)
notified Senator Mike DeWine (R-OH) of his intentions to conduct a hearing on the Firefighter Investment and Response Enhancement Act (S. 1941), sponsored by Senator DeWine.
Senator McCain, a Co-Chairman of the Congressional Fire Services
Caucus, chairs the Senate Commerce Committee where S. 1941 is pending.
Pia Pialorsi, press spokeswoman for Commerce Committee, said the committee is trying to schedule for July, but nothing definite yet. The hearing date, when selected will be posted on the Commerce Committee web site.
The FIRE Act bill introduced in 1999 by Representatives Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) and Curt Weldon (R-PA) in the House and Senators Mike DeWine (R-OH) and Christopher Dodd (D-CT) in the Senate, had a hearing on the House side in April in front of the Transportation Committee. On the Senate side it was referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation in November 1999.
The bill would give $5 billion in competitive grants to fire departments over five years through a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) program.
