DOWNTOWN TOLEDO -- Investigators want to know what caused a four-alarm fire in an empty warehouse on Tuesday. It happened at 30 North Huron Street in downtown Toledo. At one point, flames shot 30 to 40 feet in the air, and smoke could be seen for miles away. It took three hours for firefighters to get it under control. No one was hurt.
Early Wednesday, demolition crews brought in cranes to tear down the building. The warehouse was more than a hundred years old, and owned by Lucas County. It was supposed to be torn down anyway to make way for the new Toledo Mud Hens' stadium.
Lucas county inspectors say reports of squatters wandering inside the warehouse are true. But Ed Aussey, an inspector for Lucas County doesn't believe that was the problem. "We couldn't see any problems," he told the News Channel, "We had some vandalism, break-ins in the building, but we've boarded them up."
Investigators from the Toledo Police Scientific Investigation Unit were on the scene Tuesday. Arson investigators will be back on the scene again today.
