Virginia EMT Joseph Neil Sherman was killed Friday morning when a private
ambulance flipped over during a transport.
Sherman, 25, had just been married in October. He worked for the
Loudoun-Fairfax Ambulance Service and volunteered with Stafford County Fire
and Rescue, as a member of the Aquia Harbor Rescue Squad.
The accident occurred while a private Loudoun-Fairfax ambulance was on I-66
transporting a 64-year-old Loudoun County man between hospitals for a heart
procedure.
"For some reason the ambulance veered off the right side of the road,
flipped several times, and came to rest upside down in a ditch," said
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.
Police are investigating speed and fatigue as possible causes, Caldwell
said. The ambulance did not have it’s sirens activated, and no other
vehicles were involved in the accident.
The driver, EMT William Fair III, suffered broken bones and paramedic David
Carkin suffered a head injury. The transport patient’s condition has not
been released.
All three of the accident survivors are at George Washington University
Hospital, with the transport patient in the ICU, Caldwell said.
