The stamp depicts three firefighters who raised an American flag over the rubble of the World Trade Center. The image was immortalized in a photograph.
Bush unveiled the stamp in a brief ceremony in the Oval Office along with the firefighters, the postmaster general and the photographer, Thomas Franklin. Profits from stamp sales will go to firefighters, police and other emergency workers who were injured in the attacks, and to the families of such workers who died, Bush said.
``It's a good gesture by the Postal Service,'' Bush said. He thanked the firefighters for ``allowing the Postal Service to use you as a way to help our nation remember terrible incident that took place six months ago and help people get their lives back in order.''
The Heroes of 2001 stamp will sell for 45 cents, 11 cents more than standard postage. The difference will be treated as a contribution, which is tax deductible, according to the Postal Service. The stamp itself is valid for the first-class letter rate in effect at the time of purchase.
The president lifted a blue drape off a poster-sized blowup of the stamp and, with a hand on the shoulder of one firefighter, said ``Fabulous. Really good job.''
Franklin, of The Record of Hackensack, N.J., won a top honor in the annual National Headliner Awards for the photograph, it was announced Monday.
